Big Brother, Part 2
In order to get the full impact of this post, I might suggest that you first read this…
Yep, the TV police came to our door……again.
It’s only been a few months since the last visit.
I do feel a bit sorry for the poor schmuck who has this job…hunting down law abiding people….surprising them at night to see if they’re watching RTE……
And he kindly told us he’d be back in a couple of months because of course we might get a TV in the meantime.
I’m sure my gaping-dropped-open-mouth-glassy-eyed-stare spoke volumes.
I think the words ‘police state’ escaped my lips.
Could we send in a letter that, upon punishment by death, we promise not to get a TV in the next year?
Husband-Will took a more relational approach and told him that next time round we’d invite him in for tea.
Sigh.
Who knew stuff like this actually happened? We also are TVless and have been for many many years. Talk about a money grab. It is hard for some (read most) of people to understand how we can get along without one, but we manage just fine. MAybe you could ask for the inspectors to come in between supper and bed time so as not to disturb sleeping children.

That is hilarious!! i think he doesn’t believe that in this day and age someone can make the choice not to have a tv in their posession.
Maybe you should stick a note in the window saying:
To our dear TV licence friend,
We still do NOT have a TV
We have NO plans on getting one in the immediate future
We will contact YOU if this changes.
Thank you for calling!
btw, in all the years Ive owned a TV, and especially for the years when I didn’t have a licence (shock horror), I never once got a call to the door…you are the only person I know who has ever gotten a visit from them

Good grief. I’ve heard of some ridiculous taxes (ok, “fees”) but this takes the cake. Is the government that hard up for money in Dublin? Perhaps if they canned the TV tax then they wouldn’t have to pay the inspectors. They might come out ahead in the long run.
