It's truly valuable to be able to know which boxes go into which room, and to know what's in them. And movers, if you can at all afford them, because although they may break something, you'll recover so much faster at the other end. Moving has always been a paring down process for us, as we've asked ourselves what we really don't need to drag along with us ... and as we've just plain chucked huge volumes of things, most of which had been given to us by well-meaning but dispose-a-phobic relatives.
