Brief Irony (of the electric kind)

Posted by Cheryl on May 19 2007 | The Kitchen Sink

The lights have just gone off.

I love it when the power goes out. Of course, knowing that the meat is slowly defrosting in the freezer and the milk is quickly rising to room temperature in the frig isn’t that great. But other than that, I love the idea of temporarily going without electricity…the soft glow of a candle…the freedom of a gadget-less moment…

…she thought as she tapped away on her battery-powered computer…

Quite a few days of my childhood in the 50/60’s were spent with evenings of powercuts. It was always an exciting time for me and my two brothers…going upstairs to bed with Mum lighting the way with a candle and then the darkness descending behind us.

  3. usually I don’t mind too much (apart from the fact that the power mostly comes on again right at the moment where you dug out the candles….) - but it has happened more and more often recently and you come to the point where it becomes very annoying: when you just finished a very long email (no battery-powered computer here), just started to cook dinner etc… it’s not all that easy to make pancakes in total darkness:)) you could call it “a bit hit and miss”….
