Harsh Realities
Not being a current owner of a television, I admittedly run behind the times when a new series is launched and embraced by the viewing public.
And so it is that five seasons after the fact, I am watching Monk on DVD. Quirky, to be sure. But who of us with definite-leanings-but-not-quite-OCD can’t appreciate his habits…his phobias…his coping? Quite entertaining.
Anyway, it was a day for a Monk mystery, in a harsh and cruel sort of way.
And thus it began something like this—
Me: ‘Come on, we’re gonna be late for school!’
Son-Alex: ‘Wait, Hector needs to let out the chickens.’
Neighbour-Hector: ‘Hey, the chickens are dead!’
Yep, of the four current residents in the hen house, two were dead, one was dying, and one was in shock. As Alex is now prone to say, ‘Wha’ th’?’ A definite change from the normal peace and tranquility of regular morning activities.
I shall spare you any grisly photos.
On further inspection, even untrained eyes could see by the large quantities of feathers detached from their owners that something had gotten into the henhouse. A fox? Perhaps. A mink? They do skulk around here. But the hens were secured with no obvious way in. Quite sad, really. And so with no immediate solving of the case, Gentle-Lucy-Of-The-Lodge-And-Hen-Owner was forced to humanely put down the severely injured and Daughter-Kate, bless her, has checked chickens off her Potential Pets list.
Sigh.

Hey! Knitty! Congrats!

Hey - I was going to just leave a comment expressing my sympathies. . . . you know: “Bummer”. Something like that.
But I see Yvonne’s comment, Knitty! Yeah! Is it up?! You know I’ve been waiting for this. . . . .
Anyway - bummer ’bout the birds . . . but gotta run! (to check out Knitty. . . .) I’m so shallow.

I don’t watch much TV, preferring DVDs, but Monk is on my list.
Congrats on your pattern. It’s lovely, and I’ll probably be able to make one or two before Christmas! I must admit, much of its appeal comes from how sophisticated you look modelling it. Wonderful work.

sorry about the birds; we had 10 of our hens killed in the same way which we attributed to weasels which are very mean vicious critters and can get thru very small tight cracks/openings.

Good grief. My sympathies on your hens - as Ratty said, the stoats and weasels DO break out sometimes. Well done on Tudora, though - I can’t wait to knit it! Though in Texas, I may aim for the slightly looser version - thanks for the adjustment on your blog.

Oh the poor chickens. That must have been so stressful so early in the morning.

Hey there, same for blogs as for TV series: I just found your blog and am wondering why I haven’t come across it earlier. It is great. will come back!
TV - for me it is the House M.D. series I’ve just recently “found” and got addicted to. Season 3 running over here… And I do have got a tv but usually fall asleep before it starts… now one late night per week for me! Worth it! Not looked into Monk yet, though…
Sorry about the hens.
