The un-contest

Posted by Cheryl on Jan 10 2008 | The Kitchen Sink

Cuz I need something to zizz up the dreariness of winter, that’s why…

I love the idea of winning things. Alas, I never do. The next best thing is giving things. Especially when the recipient isn’t expecting it.

So, a little while ago, I thought, ‘Hey, I’d like to give away some lovely Irish Kilcarra yarn.’

But, hmm…..how to do it?

Then the obsessive-compulsive side of me kicked in and I decided that when I hit the good ol’ round number of 1500 comments posted, that 1500th commenter will receive 200 grams of the wool you see pictured.

How easy is that? No signing up. No names in a hat. No long-shot odds. Just business as usual until my milestone-for-no-particular-reason is reached!

So, where are we now? The odometer is at about 1400, so I’m thinking that in the next month or so we’ll be havin’ a winner!

Well let me help start the ball rolling by commenting. The yarn is beautiful. Is it soft? It looks soft. I like soft yarn. Do I sound mental yet?

I decided to post in the hopes that the lucky winner will be a winner sooner rather than later!! I’ve recently found your blog and love checking in for updates. Love connecting back to Ireland anyway I can now that I’m in Virginia, USA. Great job on the blog…good luck to the winner!!

  8. That yarn is gorgeous! Are we at 1500 yet? Are we there now? How about now? Oh, sorry. I was channeling my kids, there. :) Also, I love the word “zizz.”

Well that’ll zing up the comment-o-meter! did I mention how much I like turquoise? huh?

alas. like you, I never seem to win anything. . . . Ah well! I’ll keep commenting anyway - with or without an un-contest - because that’s just the kind of person I am! grin. [Can't shut me up. . . .]

  11. Well, the yarn is lovely and this kind of contest is fun. All we’ve got to do is what we usually do, visit you!

Aren’t you sweet! (are we there yet?) ;D

I scored a pullover’s worth of that very yarn on eBay - forest green with orange, purple, blue and golden yellow slubs. What fun to work with, and it made a gorgeous, warm sweater.

  16. It’s embarassing what people will do for good fiber. What? You mean I don’t have to sing naked in the rain? Oh, just leave a comment? Okay. I LOVE Tudora! Made it, blogged it. Will make more! Thanks!

I love your blog and I came from your Knitty pattern, Tudora. I love the pattern but I have a question as to which cast on you used for it? All of the cast ons that I use set me up to begin on the WS. (Obviously I am a new knitter). Thank you for a great pattern and blog.

  21. That’s a great way to do it - We did one of those at 1000 as well = ) Makes it totally random, and just nice for whomever it ends up being! The colors in that wool are gorgeous - what is it?

    11 Jan 2008 at 1:32 am

  22. That sure is some pretty yarn! Great idea!

    11 Jan 2008 at 2:14 am

  23. Nothing like a contest to draw attention. Most excellent idea with picking a posting number. Keeps things random and business as usual.

I do love the colors of those two skeins. I’m sure it is very pretty knit up.

Raining (or is that dumping) buckets of water down upon us. Ah, to think I even contemplated a bit of work in my garden.

It’s suppose to let up on Sunday, which firgures, as I have a knitting meet up with friends that will take the whole day (with travel and chatting of course).

Take care….maybe I need to send you something from Washington State to cheer you up…how would that sound?

  24. I’ll throw my comment into the ring as I too would like to be a winner - and I like Kilcarra yarn - and those colours.

  29. Hi,
I never win too :-) But I love the idea you had, and finally, it is not a bad idea to make a comment on the blog of the author of “Tudora”. I will finish it this week-end, and probably show it on my blog.
Thank you for this nice and easy pattern! Have a nice week-end.

  32. This is hilarious….. All you have to do is say “Contest” and “Comment” and watch the comments multiply. A lot like rabbits they multiply. Well, count me in for this one.

This is a hard contest to enter~! I was not required to give all my personal information, promise to give my first born child away

  37. I like this idea. Maybe I should try it out on my blog! Thanks for the generous-ness :-)

  38. This type of contest is perfect for my laziness level. I’ll have to consider trying it in the future!

And to have a bit more content: I’m not sure if it’s just my monitor settings, but I can’t see any type of box around the areas where I’m supposed to type parts of my comment, and had a hard time finding the right place to click.

    13 Jan 2008 at 2:46 am

  39. Are we there yet? Love the colors!

I just discovered Jeanie, and found that I’m in love! Being a male knitter, I have to now find someone to make this for, but I must make it!

Also, hi - trying to get at that gorgeous wool! :)

    13 Jan 2008 at 3:49 am

  41. you are to cool! what a great idea! the yarn is stunning! i hope whoever gets it will enjoy it as much as you are enjoying this!

    16 Jan 2008 at 6:09 am

  42. That wool you’re showing reminds of 2 skeins I bought in a shop in Dingle about 15 years ago and only just found again. I knit a hat and wrist warmers and I would love some more…

    16 Jan 2008 at 11:19 am

  43. What a generous and loving thought.
I hope the same kindness will reach you too.
