Dead Slow
Warning: Completely fibre-less-cuz-eternal-twisted-rib-on-a-never-ending-jumper-doesn’t-make-for-exciting-reading cultural observation to follow…
Have you ever seen something repeatedly only to have it take on new meaning with the addition of one small thing? I’ve driven over these road hazard warnings for months now. An unmistakable message, right?
But seeing this…
…yes, that hearse sitting there…it’s with irony of the ‘noir’ kind that I realise these warnings are posted outside the cemetery. Huh, never noticed that before…

Very well spotted Cheryl. Good timing.

Oh, help. I just had a rather loud snort over this. I thought it meant “Dead Slow” as in, Sheesh, this is dead slow, and so boring, but after a second look realize it’s a blind corner — or a dead end? Is it another Irish etymology thing that I don’t get? Or are we simply meant to slow down in honor of the dead? The hearse: a priceless touch.

Since I’m an English teacher, I can’t help mentioning what a good example of dark comedy that is…You didn’t happen to major in English did you?

…or are they making a comment about the dead, which are, indeed, rather slow?

It is funny how many times we do that sort of thing, over look something that later seems so obvious.

I never noticed that either! That curve is right at the cemetery. I wonder if historically it was known as ‘Dead Man’s Curve’…

Love it! And I’ve never in my life seen such a thing … I’m thinking that it’s unique to your end of the world.

Well now if that isn’t a message to take heed to I don’t know what is. Someone was very clever weren’t they!
