an expat in ireland myself i have to come to the defense of ireland!
while the health system is not good, it does look after everybody. from all i've read and heard it's easy to fall through the cracks in the US, life is easy and comfortable as long as you earn enough money to send your children to a good school and pay for the health insurance.
in ireland the schools might not be well funded but you don't need to send your children to private school or pay tutoring fees, for them to be able to have a 3rd level education. a hospital visit may not be pleasant, but you won't find yourself in debt afterwards.
oh, and the smaller cars use less petrol!
not trying to make you homesick for ireland already, just trying to stand up for the green isle because i am here to stay for another while!

My belgium pals ask me if I am happy to be going home (it is in French so I think that is what they are asking.) I am a bit sad when I think how simple and easy things can be here. But also I know that because I don't know the language I have had quite a few obstacles too that makes going home seem easy. I read somewhere that once you are an expat who returns home you are almost lost again. Things aren't the same when you left and you aren't either. You put it so nicely. I feel like when I was working and left on job for a new job. Sad to leave my old life and friends but jumping up and down for the newness of things to come. I am looking forward to some of the ease of life but I know that I will miss some of the 'ease-iness' here too. I know we will have more obstacles to come when we cross the pond. Just nice to know that we (you and I) can share them.

I lived in Europe for several years when I was a child and I *still* miss the feeling of age it had. Such a depth of history and long-ago that the US just doesn't have. And you're right, Americans are too busy. We talk about wanting connection and in the next breath say we have too much to do. I've moved around a lot and it's always such an adjustment - but I hope it's a smooth one for you, and you find new joys and delightful surprises you didn't expect!

It's always hard to move and leave friends and well-loved places behind, even if you're moving to another place that you love. Speaking as someone who's moved a lot, it all sounds like normal perspective to me. Hope it's all going smoothly for you!

I'm sorry - I can't believe I didn't think about you being in the middle of this big move! **I hereby release you from the meme tag** :)

I think that's a wonderful post, as was the previous one too; with all the beautiful and amazing pictures (particularly of your children's growth). To me, posts like this one, illustrate culture in a way that's lacking in travel shows/movies. Hope everything is going well for you and your family.

I lived in London for a little over a year in 1993-94, and when I returned home after that, I had the HARDEST adjustment back to American life. This turn of events made absolutely no sense. I was 34 when I went over, having lived all my life here, but my adjustment to English culture was easy and complete in that year, and my adjustment back was inordinately hard. It's strange, but true.
