Sicosnipophobia

Posted by Cheryl on Feb 11 2009 | 3. Weave on Wednesday

And I’ve got it bad.

I don’t recall having a fear of scissors before.  Truly, the only issue I ever had with scissors was in kindergarten when…

Warning: Unsavory Childhood Memory Ahead
I, a naturally left-handed person, couldn’t manage left-handed scissors.  Maddening, I tell you!  The daft things would never, never, ever cut.  I think it was a plot, frankly, to change all left-handed cutters into right-handed ones because, of course, all right-handed scissors worked beautifully.  Ultimately they won.  Out of necessity, I have swung the other way…scissor-wise that is.

Anyway, other than that incident, I’ve never considered the use of such cutting implements to be a scary proposition until now.  It comes with the thought of cutting this…

Houndstooth in lovely coral and cappuccino cottony shades.  It’s sitting on my loom, wanting to be a cushion cover.  But to become such a winsome household item, it needs to be sewn.  And for it to be sewn, it needs to be cut.  And for it to be cut, I need to pick up those scissors.  I know I’ve done it before and love the result…

But still, it will take a bit of talking myself down from the ledge of hysteria to get the thing done.

Yikes. I’M feeling an anxiety attack for you and your houndstooth.

Make sure you have an adequate amount of caffeine in your systems so you don’t have the shakes. One latte or cappuccino should do it, don’t you think? Wouldn’t want withdrawl shakes to make a mistake!

I’m not familiar with weaving fabrics but are there any tricks or necessary interventions to keep the edges from unraveling?

P.S. The green pillow is beautiful! Are you sure you aren’t an interior designer in this life?

The measuring and the irrevocable cutting that follows is what keeps me from sewing more. Oh, and the pressing. I guess I really just like the needle and thread bit.

To get back to my point – you’re not alone.

  3. I think that phobia ist totally normal where your own handwoven fabrics are concerned! you know all the work you put into it and are afraid to ruin all your efforts – isn’t it rather a good thing to be careful around something precious? I have been a knitter for endless years (or so it seems) but I am still close to a heart attack when I have to cut into my knitting to work a steek – why would it be any different for your fabric?:)) you’ll manage – eventually!

  4. I can’t watch!
Are you really going to attack that beautiful houndstooth with scissors?
Don’t show the process! Just show the beautiful finished product, okay?

  5. I, too, had to swing to the right and must live with it

  6. The cushions are gorgeous. I love the houndstooth and fabric combinations. And I know just how you feel about cutting. I go through the very same thing every time I cut out a pattern! K x

See, this is exactly how I feel about all fabric except old linens from my grandmother which I have in copious amounts. Sadly making a handbag from old worn linens is not really such a great idea.

  8. …but doesn’t it make you feel like you’ve truly created “fabric” because now you can slice it to pieces!

    I know…not helping….

  9. I know exactly how you feel, the first cut is the hardest! I am bad with beautiful stash fabric but to have to cut my own handwoven fabric, my goodness, I would be right up on that ledge with you. Gorgeous, gorgeous fabric, a perfect shade of red.

  11. I can’t even get to the scissor part because I am astounded by your weaving. It’s absolutely beautiful. I’m going to pretend that you sit home all day, letting the maid do all the work, while you weave and knit and sew all day. Don’t burst my bubble!
btw, I was with you on the spotted button! It was my favorite!

  12. If I had woven this beautiful fabric, I’d be scared to cut it, too! :-)

I sometimes cut my old knitted sweaters. I always think: that’s the end of that sweater… and then when I have fixed it all up, I’m glad I did it!

  15. The fabric is so beautiful – no wonder you’re dreading the scissors! If I knew how to weave my own fabric, I wouldn’t want to cut it up either!

I’m rather late to the party on this one, maybe you’ve given up reading these comments by now, but I say go ahead and cut! You know what you’re doing. It will turn out great. And by the way I am also a left-hander who has no trouble cutting with right-handed scissors. I think as children we are just naturally adaptable. The odd thing is that I also use a knife with my right hand. Are there left and right-handed knives?

Beautiful cushions. Will you be selling any similar ones any time soon. I would love to buy one or two if so.
