Old Man Winter or Mother Earth

Posted by Cheryl on Apr 07 2009 | 2. Garden on Tuesday

I don’t know who to blame…but somebody’s gonna get it!

It’s understandable that knitting and weaving time are going to be cut dramatically short, what with a new job and the gardening season nearly upon us.

Seeds are patiently waiting to be plopped into the gently warmed earth.
The tiller is newly purchased, still shiny and anticipating its first bite of dirt.
But wait…
Something’s not right.
I’m finding a strange pattern going on here.

Days at work are sunny and warm.
Days at home are cold and rainy.

Before it was 70 degrees.
Now it’s more like 40.

Others are enjoying the sight of new sprouts in their veg patch.
Mine still wears a forlorn untidy face with only a dog toy to break the monotony.

Lettuces should have been planted by now.
And yet they still sit enveloped in packaging.

What’s going on here?
Is it just me or are there terrestrial powers conspiring to keep me from the garden?
Big sigh.

But wee surprises such as these mini daffs bring a bit of hope…

  1. Ireland was rainy right? Put on your wool, your wet suit and wellies and get to planting!

  3. Hail killed my garden on Sunday. Not funny.

  4. I know what you mean – but we have lately had more rainy than nice days, which adds insult to injury. Especially when I am stuck outside at work …

  5. Awwww! My daffodils are long gone, and now they’re in that awkward green foliage stage, fully aware that I’m just waiting for them to dry up so that I can cut them back.

  7. the not so nice side of being back to work again:(( when I worked fulltime I had the impression that the weekends were wet and cold and the weekdays were sunny! and now that I ride my bike to town once a week – it’s always raining on friday:)) does that fall under “murphy’s law”? don’t worry – once you do plant your stuff they usually catch up pretty quickly!

  8. We got a skiff of snow out here in the valley last night. I almost…almost…put in seeds Sunday when it was over 70. I find it best not to even consider planting seeds until after April 15 (peas and potatoes excluded, of course, if you’ve got an established and prepared patch…which we do not.)

  9. ah, but the ‘wee daffs’ are so lovely! and the smell of those grape hyacinths. . . . . really puts you on your face, though, to get close enough to catch a whiff.

    Worth it.

Time is precious these days, sounds like. Looking forward to seeing the garden go in and admiring your patience!

  10. Sadly we still have snow on the ground and while it is melting it is still far too cold to plant a garden. I feel you pain….

    Take care.
