Knee High Socks by Craftplace
Disclaimer:
This is such a lovely sock pattern that it seems a shame to lose it due to a broken website link. This pattern was originally published on http://craftplace.org.uk and in attempting to contact Craftplace for a republishing of the pattern, email connections also seem to be broken. This knee high sock pattern gives credit as being adapted from Charlene Schurch’s book Sensational Knitted Socks.

Abbreviations:
Dpns – double pointed needles
St/sts – stitch/es
Beg – beginning
Rnd/s – round/s
Rep – repeat
Patt – pattern
K – knit
P – purl
St.st – stocking stitch
C6L – cable 6 left: slip next 3sts onto cable needle and leave at front of
work, knit next 3sts, knit 3sts from cable needle
dec – decrease
k2tog – knit next 2sts together
p2tog – purl next 2sts together
WS – wrong side
RS – right side
Sl – slip
Ssk – slip next 2sts one at a time from left hand needle to right hand
needle, insert tip of left hand needle into the front of the 2 slipped stitches
from left to right, and knit them together.
Method:
Using 3.25mm dpns, cast on 84sts and distribute them equally between 3
of the 4 dpns – 28sts on each needle. Join the sts into a circle, taking care
not to twist. Place the stitch marker at the start of the round – this needle is
needle # 1 and will remain so until the sts are re-arranged for the foot
shaping. The remaining needles are numbered 2 & 3 sequentially as they
are worked.
Using the 4th needle and beg k2, work in k2, p2 rib until 40 rnds have been
completed.
Transfer 2sts from needle #2 to needle #3.
Change to 4mm dpns and commence patt as follows:
Rnds 1,2,5 & 6: *(p1, k1) twice, p2, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnds 3 & 4: * p2, (k1, p1) twice, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: * p2, ( k1, p1) twice, C6L; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 8: * p2, (k1, p1) twice, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep rnds 1 to 8 three more times, then rounds 1 to 7 once.
Dec rnd: * p2tog, (k1, p1) twice, k6; rep from * to end of rnd (77sts).
Re-arrange the sts so that the needle holding the stitch marker (#1) has
22sts, needle #2 also holds 22sts, and needle #3 holds 33sts. Make sure
that the round begins on needle #1 with the moss st part of the pattern.
Continue in patt as follows:
Rnds 1,2,5 & 6: * p2, k1, p2, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnds 3 & 4: * (p1, k1) twice, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 7: * (p1, k1) twice, p1, C6L; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 8: *(p1, k1) twice, p1, k6; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep rnds 1 to 8 as set without any further shaping until the leg of the sock
is the required length.
Heel flap
Re- arrange the sts thus:
Sl the 6sts that form the cable from the end of needle #2 onto the beg of
needle #3.
Needle #3 now holds the sts required for the heel flap.
Change to 3.75mm dpns and complete the foot of the sock on these
needles.
Work back and forth on these heel flap sts.
Dec row (WS): *(p1, k1) twice, p2tog, (k1, p1) twice, k2tog; rep from * to
last 3sts, p1, k1, p1 (33sts).
1st row: Sl.1, *p1, k1; rep from * to end.
2nd row: as first row.
3rd row: Sl.1, * k1, p1; rep from * to end.
4th row: as 3rd row.
Rep rows 1 to 4 until 20 rows in total have been worked for the heel flap,
with WS facing for the next row.
Heel turn
1st row (WS): Sl.1, p17, p2tog, p1, turn.
2nd row: Sl.1, k4, ssk, k1, turn.
3rd row: Sl.1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn.
4th row: Sl.1, k6, ssk, k1, turn.
Continue in this way, incorporating 1 extra stitch on every row, until all the
heel flap sts have been worked, ending with a RS row and 19sts left on the
heel flap.
Gusset
Re-arrange the sts thus:
Move all the sts from needle #1 onto needle #2 (38sts on needle #2) –
these sts are for the upper side of the sock and will continue to be worked
in the cable and moss stitch patt as set for the leg of the sock.
Place 9sts onto needle #4 (the working needle) from the right hand side of
the heel flap.
Remove the stitch marker from needle #1 and place it onto needle #3 – the
needle with the stitch marker is now needle #1 and should hold 10sts..
Continue working with this needle and pick up and knit 16sts from the side
of the heel flap.
Then pick up and knit 2 more sts from between the gusset and the heel
flap – this helps to eliminate a hole forming – 28sts on needle #1.
Work 38sts on needle #2 in the cable and moss st. patt.
Pick up and knit 2sts at the top of the gusset as before, then pick up and
knit 16sts from the side of the heel flap. Knit the 9sts from the heel flap.
There should now be:
28sts on needle #1, worked in st.st.
38sts on needle #2, worked in the cable and moss st patt.
27sts on needle #3, worked in st.st.
Gusset decrease
Rnd 1: K to last 2sts on needle #1, ssk, work all sts as set on needle #2,
k2tog, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: K to last 3sts on needle #1, k2tog, k1, work all sts on needle #2 as
set, k1, ssk, k to end of rnd.
Rnd 3: Work all sts as set without shaping.
Rep rnds 2&3 until there are 71sts remaining, with 17sts on needle #1,
38sts on needle #2 and 16sts on needle #3.
Foot
Continue without any further shaping, working st.st on needles 1&3 and
the cable patt on needle #2, until the foot is the correct length from heel to
toe.
Toe Shaping
Continue in st.st over all sts.
Needle #1: Knit all sts and remove the stitch marker from this needle.
Needle #2: K4, k2tog, (k5, k2tog) 4 times, k4 – 33sts.
Begin dec for toe shaping on the next needle – place the stitch marker on
this needle; it is now needle #1. So now, needle #1 holds 16sts and needle
#2 holds 17sts, both for the sole of the sock, and needle #3 holds 33st for
the top of the sock.
Toe Decreasing
Rnd 1: Needle #1 – K1, ssk, k to end.
Needle #2 – K to last 3sts, k2tog, k1.
Needle #3 – K1, ssk, k to last 3sts, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: K all sts.
Rep rnds 1&2 until 34sts remain. Then rep rnd 1 until 18sts remain.
Place all 9sts for the sole on one needle, and 9sts for the upper on 2nd
needle.
Graft the toe sts together.
Darn in any loose ends on the WS of the work.
